For a long time, the Citroen factory in Genk in France which employs 15000 people experienced traffic jams during changeovers. To solve the problem, the company set up a Plan de Déplacement d’Entreprise (PDE) which offers alternatives to individual car use. The working hours and communal transport timetable have been synchronised (itinerary, a service adapted to the workers) and showers and changing rooms have been installed for cyclists. Encouraging carpools has proved effective since 38 % of employees now use it. This step has helped improve traffic around the industrial site, reduce spending on transport and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
