Britain is dirtier than ever before as the culture of throwaway consumerism fuels a ‘litter epidemic’ which is costing the country £850 million a year, environmental groups have warned.

The Keep Britiain Tidy survey of local authorities in England showed the cost of employing litter pickers and buying equipment to clear chewing gum rose by £100 million in the last year.
