It is estimated that 3000 macaques are captured every year from the wild in Indonesia. Most babies captured are used for research by international pharmaceutical groups or universities. The others are sold on the local market to become pets in private homes or Topeng Monyets, the performing monkeys, in the streets of Jakarta. This barbaric tradition is condemn by wildlife protection agencies.
