In Russia, the International Fund for Animal Welfare supports a bear rescue center in the Tropetskiy area, south east of Saint Petersburg. The area is considered to have the largest bear population in the whole of the Tver region . Game managers have counted 186 bears in the territory. With the presence of lumberjacks and hunters in the forest many cubs become orphan. The center rescues them, feeds them and gives them a shelter before releasing them into the wild when they are old and fit enough to survive by themselves.
