More than 10 years Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, ICCO and WWF have been campaigning against the illegal timber trade. Finally the European Parliament voted for a law that bans illegal timber. Europe is one of the biggest markets for illegal timber, that contributes to global deforestation and forest degradation, exacerbates the climate change problem, threatens species with extinction, undermines legitimate business by undercutting timber companies that act responsibly and causes social conflicts with local populations, as well as financial losses for forest-rich developing countries. We applaud this success but we will strictly follow its implementation.
