French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea (IFREMER) is a public organization for marine research and development administered by the French Ministry of Ecology, Development, and Sustainable Planning. IFREMER has an annual budget of nearly 160 million euros and employs 1,385 people in 5 centers (Channel/North sea, Brest, Nantes, Mediterranean, Pacific), 26 locations along France’s mainland coast and in its overseas departments and territories, 25 research departments, resources for fish farming and experimental studies, 7 ships (including 4 deep-sea ships), a manned submersible vehicle, and a deep-sea, remote-operated machine (-6,000 m).
