mpingo conservation project

Launched in 1995 by an ecology specialist from the University of Cambridge, the Mpingo Conservation Project helps rural populations in south-east Tanzania to manage their forest in a sustainable way. As well as helping them attain FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification, the NGO (status acquired in 2004) allows rural Tanzanians to make a living using the resources in their forests, especially the East African Blackwood, a rare species highly valued by stringed instrument makers and musicians in the West.
