A month after the explosion at the AZF chemical factory in Toulouse, its manager authorised the discharge of several tonnes of liquid ammonia into the lower tributaries of the river Garonne. The discharged waste polluted a 1.5km length of the river and led to the death of 8 000 fish. The Appeal Court of Toulouse passed judgement at the end of July 2008: AZF must pay a fine of €8 000 (€10 000 at first instance) and €28 125 in damages to each of the parties to the action, three ecological associations: Friends of the Earth, France Nature Environnement and AMPER-TOS, the national association for the protection of water and rivers.
