In Milton-Keynes, a new city 70 km north of London, families can opt for recyclable nappies. The considerable advantage of this option for parents is that they can have their baby’s nappies cleaned for £ 6 to 9 a week. And to encourage them to use this service, the city offers them a £ 30 allowance per child as well as advice on how to use the service. With a population of 200 000 inhabitants, Milton-Keynes uses about 25 million nappies a year. Yet, since 2005, when the service was set up, about 450 tons of disposable nappies have been saved thus reducing the amount of waste which has to be treated.
