To move towards more eco-friendly consumption, the Auchan chain has opened a « self discount » section in 173 of its hypermarkets. The products in this section are less expensive as they do not have any superfluous wrapping. Thus, the coffee, the cereal or the rice is weighed, which allows the customer to choose the quantity he/ she wants. 500 g of loose cereal for example uses 9 times less wrapping than classic packaging. This initiative which has also been implemented in Auchan hypermarkets in six European countries has saved 3 400 tons of wrapping since 2004.
