The Cdmoi organisation has decided to make up for a shortcoming of the waste value system by collecting used CDs and DVDs which are usually incinerated even though they could be recycled. The discs are indeed mainly made of polycarbonate which, once it is separated from the aluminium, the paint and the varnish, can be recycled to make computer casing, plexiglass panes, toys or grains for road surfaces. In Lorraine, the organisation has installed collection points and, since 2005, 45 tons have already been reused. The money which is collected is used to fund projects for children and old people.
