As part of a European agroforestry research program, 750 ha of forest were planted during winter 2007 in 25 French departments. The principle : a mutually profitable association between trees planted at low density (30 to 100 trees per hectare) and cereal and legume (peas, soya bean, etc.) crops.
A hectare which combines trees and cereals can produce as much as 1.3 ha of separate crops. This process has the added advantage of reintroducing biodiversity and limiting ground degradation.
