In 2007, the city of Lyon set up a 14 megawatt wood-fired boiler, with the support of the community of Grand Lyon and its suburbs and the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME). This wood-fired boiler supplies electricity to 5 500 houses and 30 local government structures. It recycles a lot of waste: pruned wood, sawdust, palettes, crates, etc. It has replaced a factory powered by coal and fuel oil and CO2 emissions have gone down by 87 %.
