Since 2006, the wastewater from Combaillaux, in the Hérault region (France) have been by purified by earthworms : in two large tanks, 25 000 little worms per square metre are on a bed of grave land are buried under a layer of pine bark, a bed of sawdust. Day and night, these tireless workers work and purify the town’s wastewater. At the end of the process, the worm droppings are collected from the « worm-filter » (used as compost) and the water is practically pure. This very inexpensive technique makes it possible to produce excellent compost.
