The double life of wastewater

California now has the largest water purification plant in the world to make waste water fit for consumption. Water from the sewers is purified and cleaned through a labyrinth of pipes, tanks and microfilters and in turn restock the surrounding water-bearing land. This technique of indirectly reusing waste water, which consists of injecting the water which is recuperated underground has the added advantage of preventing salt water from seeping into the soil.
