In Argentina, a national food safety program is working to promote the self-production of fruits and vegetables in Bueno Aires’ shanty towns by setting up market gardens there. The beneficiaries thus take advantage of good quality, healthier, better balanced and more varied products whilst reducing what they spend on food. This program provides the families with seeds for free and offers training and technical assistance. The 3.5 million inhabitants concerned are today 70% self-sufficient for their consumption of fresh vegetables.
