Ireland is the first European country to have passed a law which will prohibit the sale of traditional incandescent light bulbs in favour of energy-saving light bulbs from January 2009. Greenpeace has welcomed this initiative and highlighted the effectiveness of this measure which should prevent the emission of 700 000 tons of CO2 a year. This is the equivalent of an annual saving of 185 million Euros a year on electricity for households.
