Gas from waste

In September 2007, the Lille metropolitan area opened an organic waste Treatment Center (Centre de valorisation organique (CVO)) which should be completely operational by the end of 2008. This Treatment centre has to treat 100 000 tons of organic waste a year (a quarter of the waste collected) produced by the 650 000 inhabitants of the urban community. This Biomethane plant will produce 34 000 tons of compost and 4 million m3 of biogas, which will fulfil the fuel demands of over 150 buses belonging to Lille’s public transport company for the same price as diesel.
