The industrial symbiosis concept

In 1960, four companies and a local group created an interdependent network in Kalundborg (Denmark). The power station collects the warm water from a refinery’s cooling system to improve its purification process. Then, the plaster factory, which used a lot of energy to heat the gypsum, was interested in the excess gasses produced by the oil being refined. Nearby, the cement factory used ashes from the coal’s combustion in the power station. A fish farm has come and implanted itself there, attracted by the supply of warm water…

Today, 24 partnerships have been set up in this way. The protagonists of the experiment have given it a name : « industrial symbiosis ».
