The Association for the Right to an Economic Initiative (L’Association pour le droit à l’initiative économique (ADIE)) was set up in 1989 by the economist Maria Nowak. The idea is simple : create a microcredit in France to allow the unemployed to set up their businesses. By granting loans of more than 5 000 Euros over a period of 2 years and by ensuring that cases are followed up, it has been a success. In total, 51 700 of the credits granted allowed 44 170 companies and 53 000 jobs to be created.
