In 2004 in Ethiopia, a women’s education program was led by the Red Cross International Committee (Comité International de la Croix-Rouge (CICR)) in 15 villages in the Afar region. Men and women from the region’s semi-nomadic shepherd societies were chosen within their village to take part in literary classes for 3 months.
Medical training was also organised, based on a program specially adapted for shepherd populations. The students who passed their exams left with professional certificates and medical products which they need for their work in the bush.
