Half a million women die each year due to complications during pregnancy. 99 % of these women are in developing countries. In 2003, In Senegal, the NGO Aviation Sans Frontières that helps isolated populations has set up a mission to evacuate pregnant women who experience difficulties during childbirth to the Dakar hospital. 6 000 women a year die in childbirth in this country. ASF is currently in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Niger.
