A language for the touaregs

Published on: Last updated:

Over half of the 6 000 languages spoken on the planet are under threat of extinction. In 2004, UNESCO took part in the publication of a new bimonthly journal published in Tifinagh, the Touareg language, as well as in French. It is distributed in the touareg communities in the north of Niger. This new journal was very successful with nomad populations and many cultural activities about Tifinagh followed. In 2005, UNESCO contributed to the publication of 6 new issues of the journal. This project will be organising training courses for the editorial and technical team to ensure that the project carries on.
