Several dozen towns in England and now in the United States, Australia and New Zealand have set up a community fossil fuel energy reduction program called « Transition Towns ». This movement started in Ireland and was then developed in Totnes in Devon in 2006 by Rob Hopkins, an English environmentalist. These town councils explore all the practical solutions for the local reduction of the town's energy dependence. In concrete terms, the inhabitants create common gardens, repair old objects, swap goods and services, reduce their waste or recycle it, etc. Many exchanges and conferences are also organised locally with the aim of gathering other innovative ideas.

TT exponential growth Fortunately it isn't only bad things that grow exponentially. The note about Transition Towns is dated 26/08/08 and refers to several dozen communities have adopted the idea. Today, 06/03/10, less than two years later there are several hundred and probably well over a thousand. The number is increasing so fast that it is becoming difficult to count. |
