Sea Criminals Firmly Dealt With

In November 2003, the Brest (France) magistrate’s court fined the captain of the ship ‘Voltaire’ €100 000. The captain, who pleaded guilty to bleeding his fuel tanks off the coast of Finistère, left a 100 000m² layer of petrol behind his container ship. France Nature Environnement (FNE), the other party to the action, was awarded €10 000 in damages.
