In 2005, the Canadian activist, born in Kuujjuaq in the northern region of Quebec, lodged a complaint to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in order to protect the rights of the Inuit people from the effects of climate change. Former president of the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC), an organisation representing some 155 000 Inuit from Canada, Alaska, Greenland, and Russia, she was amongst those nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. |
La banquise arctique a fondu de 40% depuis 1960. La banquise arctique qui recouvre le pôle Nord très rapidement sous l'effet du réchauffement climatique. Selon la NASA, elle perd près de 10% de sa couche de glace permanente tous les dix ans depuis 1980 et pourrait même disparaître en été avant 100 ans. Au Groenland, la disparition de la banquise menace le mode de vie traditionnel des Inuits qui ne peuvent plus chasser le phoque comme avant. Chacun des 6 milliards d'habitants de la planète peut contribuer à réduire la pollution de l'air, et à stabiliser le climat en limitant sa production de gaz à effet carbonique.
